Back in undergraduate, I had a major chip on my shoulder when it came to trendy and popular things. My reasoning was that if it’s popular, it can’t possibly be any good. I’ve mellowed (a bit) since then, but I’m still very distrustful of mega-popular things, partially because I often find myself out of step with pop culture and partially because I try to avoid herd mentality whenever possible.

That being said, there is some stuff that is both popular and good, and my attitude often precludes me from enjoying it until it’s too late in the game. A friend recommended FutureSex/LoveSounds to me, and I decided that I trusted her enough to give it a try. I wasn’t really into the album so much, but I was impressed with the depth and breath of music on the album. It, along with his guest spots on Saturday Night Live turned me around on Justin Timberlake.

While this song is from a different album, it’s still a good tune, and gets people jammin’ when I play it. I hope you enjoy it!

My mother was a huge Paul Simon fan. For a while, I used to listen to “Graceland” every night as I went to sleep. I think I could probably sing the whole album, karaoke style, from memory. In fact, Simon’s proclivity for blending different styles of music, as he does on the “Graceland” album, was a huge influence on my own musical preferences and tastes.

This song, which is a regular feature in my live show, is probably one of his best (and that’s a high bar to clear). I tried my best to do it justice.

8 Don’t Go In There! Talking about Race, Racism, and Race Issues in the time of the Zombie Apocalypse

Horror films are a wonderful source of escapism, where we can feel the thrill of terror in the relative safety of our living rooms or a crowded movie theatre. One of the all-time classics within the horror genre is the zombie movie: hordes of shuffling, shambling atrocities hell-bent on devouring the flesh of the still-living. One of the iconic images of any good zombie movie is the panic-stricken victim of a zombie bite who is slowly turning from human into monster, as all morality and reason drains from their body while their comrades feverishly debate whether or not to put their erstwhile friend out of hir ‘misery’ courtesy of a well-timed shotgun blast to the face.

I’m sure at least some of you are wondering what I’ve been doing to keep myself busy since I stopped blogging. A lot of that time has being re-invested into becoming better at my job, but what about after hours? Well, as I said in my perhaps-too-brief post when I left FTB, I’m focusing my efforts on my music career now. With that in mind, here’s an early version of a cover of a Snow Patrol song that sort of showcases the project I’ve been working on.

https://crommunist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/snow-patrol-chasing-cars.mp3

The trick is, of course, reproducing that sound live, which I am able to do thanks to some very fancy new hardware I’ve been playing with for the past few months. I just recently picked up something that allows me to record it to my computer, so hopefully there will be some more similar stuff coming your way soon.

If you like it, please check out my Facebook page, or my ReverbNation page if you’re not a Facebook person, and let me know what you think. There’s photos, links to YouTube videos, and a downloadable version of this song. If you subscribe, you’ll get notifications when I put new stuff up, or you can just periodically check back in here.

2 Movie Friday: Don’t Dream It’s Over

Part of the reason I haven’t been writing as much is because I have been playing more guitar. I recently bought a fancy new effects pedal from Line 6, and I have been learning to master it and incorporate it into my live performances. The options are virtually endless, and the going is slow. Here’s one of my favourite new things to do with it:

5 Vanity Friday – This Love

Haven’t done one of these in a while. I have a gig with the band tonight and a solo gig tomorrow at the King’s Head Pub, the place where I got my start in Vancouver. Should be interesting. I also bought a new effects pedal that I am slowly learning to use (so many options, so little knowledge).

I will try to get some electric stuff recorded soon, but until then, here’s a new acoustic cover I’ve been working on:
