A couple of years ago I fell into a situation that was familiar to me, and likely familiar to many of you as well. I had met someone, we had good chemistry, but I wasn’t sure if there was mutual romantic interest. And so I was trying to suss out what her feelings were, careful not to cross ‘the line’. The funny thing about ‘the line’ is that the closer you are to it, the more you realize it’s not as solid as you might have believed.
So this song is about being in that situation:
Lyrics:
It’s simple in theory; Got to get you near me
But these days words fail me; you’re passing, I’m right be-
Chorus
-hind the dotted line, waiting for you to give me a sign
But I don’t mind: I’m keeping all the love I find
It’s been a while, but I can still remember how to smile
I wait for your answer; makes my heart beat faster
Just the thought of your kiss; I hope that it’s just be-
Chorus
And if I grit my teeth and bear it, it’s not so scary
Thinking of you in the arms of someone other than me
I can almost see… I can almost be the one, but you’ve got to let me know
You run and I catch you; that’s not what ‘just friends’ do
No bats in my belfry; hope to find myself be-
-side an open mind, and counting as the stars align for you and I walking in the sand, our hands entwined
And in time, I know that I can make you mine if you don’t mind
I don’t want to be unkind,
Is it all right if dreaming of you keeps me up all night?
It’s simple in theory; got to get you near me
So come closer…
Chorus
So come a little bit closer now, come on closer darling
By the way, the end to this particular story is that we never crossed ‘the line’, which was probably for the best. We’re good friends now, and I don’t think that would have happened if things had gone that other way. Plus I got a song out of it.
