I am currently in some form of en route to my nation’s capital, the city of Ottawa, where I will be at the Eschaton2012 Conference giving a presentation entitled Don’t Go In There! Talking about race and racism in the time of the zombie apocalypse. There will be no surprises in it for those of you who are regular readers of my blog, but maybe the visual element (and the soothing sound of my gilded voice) will make it all the more impactful.
I’ll be shuffling around downtown Ottawa on Friday afternoon. If anyone’s interested in saying hello, but can’t go to the conference, I’ll have a bit of time. Fire me an e-mail and I will try to organize some kind of meetup before the start of the evening’s events.

Figures. The time that FTB ‘ers are coming to present, I’m away on work in T.O. 😦 If you’re out and about for drinks, may I suggest Pub Italia on Preston? It’s nothing fancy, but they’ve got the best selection of beers I have seen save for the Beihr market in Toronto……and it’s usually not as busy as the ones in the Market.
If you have the time, you may want to hop over to Hull to see The Museum of Civilization before it changes into the Museum of Nationalism….er, I mean, History.
eh in fairness it is mostly just canadian history already. So I don’t know that making it official with a name change really affects anything….
True. But they often have travelling exhibits that have nothing to do with Canada. The recent Mayan exhibit was one such event, which I really enjoyed.
From what I hear, it’s going to become more of a monarchy (blah) and Canadian military related museum. Nothing against Canadian military history – I really appreciate the War museum – but considering that the War museum is just across the river, it feels more then a little redundant.
Yeah we’ll see how it turns out… Then again I’m still sore over the museum of nature :P.
Michaeld: Do you not like the renovations they did or is it something else that you’re sore about the museum of nature?
The renovations. I feel like I grew up in that museum used to go every other week when they’d have plays on in their theater, on class trips, I volunteered there during high school when they were doing the reconstruction work, so I have a lot of memories of the place and a strong attachment to it.
Some of its just liking parts of the old exhibits that are gone, some of its nostalgia, some of it is just the aesthetics. The new atrium is all sterile white plaster walls, I remember some of the new galleries seeming too bright (I always think of it as being dark and rich and mysterious).
I dunno it’s not all bad and I’ve only visited the new museum 2 or 3 times. I guess maybe I’d compare it to a movie remake. Some of the old anachronisms are gone which is nice but some of the rich texture of the experience seems to be lost…
Ah yes I agree with you but I do like the new dinosaur exibits. Let’s just say I got pretty sick of seeing the same old bones 😉
I’ll have to check tomorrow night but aside from a few new additions like the Carnotaurus being moved into the museum proper instead of their Gatineau facility I seem to recall a lot of the dinosaurs being the same.

On a personal note, my SO’s family is also from Guyana and now (mostly) in Canada. She was raised Muslim but is now a non-believer.
